Beauty Sleep, It’s a Real Thing

We as hosts see so many new products, whether it’s fashion, electronics or beauty. However, once in a while one comes along that blows me away!  I will be 55 years old this year and at this point, it’s not beautiful shoes that I notice on someone, it is their skin.  I am always on the lookout for the fountain of youth…and I think I may have found it!  I am talking about Evoté Skin Care.  This brand debuted exclusively at Evine in May and it is different than anything I have seen, read or presented.  So when I was fortunate to get to host the worldwide launch of this evolution in skincare, I was really excited.

Evoté was started by a husband and wife dream duo, Irena and Nik James.  Irena is a highly respected instructor at UCLA and well known around the globe for educating on the latest in skincare innovation and cosmetic ingredients. Nik is the President and Chairman of YG Laboratories, a private label skincare manufacturer and developer. Nik was born into the beauty business as the son of the world’s most preeminent cosmetic ingredient expert, Rebecca Gadberry.

Evoté’s claim to fame is that it is a scientific, patent-pending system that works with your skin at NIGHT when your skin and body are biologically programmed to restore themselves, AKA “Beauty Sleep.”

OK, when I heard what they had to say I was intrigued and I had to try it for myself.  Fast-forward 1 month since I first tried Evoté and I am sold!  I started off with the Evoté Step 1 and Step 2, 12 hour bio complex to kick start my Evoté journey.  I did this for 20 days and my skin looked brighter and firmer with better elasticity and radiance. I then moved onto a nighttime only routine with Evoté. I use the night cleanser, the night serum, the night eye cream, the night neck & décolleté cream and the night lip serum.  This routine is easy and very effective.  I continue to see improvements in the appearance of my skin with less fine lines and a more youthful look to the texture of my skin. I gave Evoté a HUGE stamp of approval!

OK, so enough about me…I thought it would be fun to get to know the couple behind this new skincare line so I did a Question & Answer session with the power couple, Irena and Nik James.

1. What was the first beauty product you ever created?

Irena:  An egg white, lemon, sage and sour cherry masque that I made from the ingredients from my fridge and the sour cherry tree that grew in front of my parents house.  I was 12 years old!

Nik:  I can’t even remember that was so many products ago.

2. How did you get into this crazy business of beauty?

Irena:  I grew up around very strong women who were my mentors from a very early age and watched them apply the knowledge of ancient European herbal modalities, modern biology, horticulture, agriculture, skin care sciences and cosmetic chemistry into daily life.  My own skin struggles pushed me into professional skin care research, education and formulation.

Nik:  I was literally born into it!

3. Chocolate or Vanilla?

Irena:  Must have a mix of both, how about a combo?

Nik:  Chocolate!

4. What inspires you?

Irena:  Being able to help others achieve their potential, believe in themselves and recognize special and unique value they can bring to the world.  I am also inspired by the strengths of the human spirit, life and nature and the relentless will and need to evolve in order to survive better on this planet. This includes all life forms, from my children and my husband, animals and plants and those invisible creatures, microbes we coexist with.

Nik:  My family.  Seeing my kids feel confident and secure because they know we’ve always got their backs as well as the belief and support of Irena.

5. Where is your happy place?

Irena:  Weekends at home by the pool with my pile of books and 3 highlighters listening to my husband singing along with James Brown hits while cooking one of his delicious Sunday family meals.

Nik:  With my family in our backyard on a sunny Southern CA Sunday afternoon.

6. If you weren’t doing Evoté and in the beauty biz, what would you be up to right now?

Irena:  Working on my degree in Social anthropology and promoting charities that make it possible for underprivileged children and orphans from war affected areas to get education and clean water.

Nik:  Stand up comedy and running a charity for abandoned bulldogs.

7. What were you like in high school?

Irena:  The mix of 2 opposites.  Mostly studious, serious, nerdy and mildly anti-social, but also adventurous, loved to travel and learn about different cultures.  I always felt out of place growing up in Eastern Europe and always felt my home was somewhere else.

Nik:  I was a friend with every clique and group, (I was actually 2nd runner up for Senior Class Friendliest) despite the fact that I looked very different from everyone else.  I had green hair, or purple or blue and piercings in my nose, lip etc. and sang in a punk rock band!

8. How did the 2 of you meet?

Irena:  Nik’s mom was my Cosmetic Chemistry mentor and hired me to work as her Director of Education and co-instructor at UCLA Extension Cosmetic Sciences program.

Nik:  My mom “imported” Irena from Canada and brought her on to be Irena’s mentor.  I was managing HR at the time and the rest they say is history.

So is Evoté a skincare story or love story?  For Irena and Nik, I think a love story.  For me Evoté is now the chance for me to love my skin!

Thanks Evoté!

What’s a Hoosier Anyway?

Last week my family and I set out on our longest road trip to date. Minneapolis, MN to Bloomington, IN.   I can’t believe I didn’t discuss road trips in my earlier blogs . . . isn’t this the season dedicated to hours in the car eating junk food, listening to the radio and counting cows?! I feel like it’s a rite of passage for every American child, and mine were totally up for the challenge.

Backing out of the driveway, my hubby had ‘Holiday Road’ blaring from the speakers (all great road trips must pay homage to Nat’l Lampoons Vacation, whether Aunt Edna is with you or not) and both boys were armed with their favorite movies, headphones and snacks for days. I planned to use these hours to catch up on email, sort through photos on my phone and make sure our family calendar was on point when we returned. But, as always, motion sickness set in half way through my first email and in lieu of being productive, I counted cows.

I feel like when we travel, we throw all rules out the windows. Bed times, nutrition, screen time, all take a back seat to accommodate the road trippin’ timeline. So, when we made our first stop in Chicago, already past the boy’s bedtime, it was fitting that we entered the lobby of the hotel to some serious bass, dark lights and a bar full of 20-somethings in their finest “I’m looking for a date” fashions. The lobby bar was a total club scene and there I stood with my family, covered in chip crumbs, ice cream spills and backpacks full of stuffed animals and dinosaurs. (Parenthood Erin blog 3 fireworkssure does change a Saturday night.) We definitely cramped the cool-kids weekend vibes and found immediate refuge up a few levels in our room. My kids were thrilled to be up way past their bed time, ordering pizza in bed and watching the Olympics. And if that wasn’t good enough, just like in a movie, outside our huge picture window, over-looking Lake Michigan, a fireworks show erupted right in front of us and for the first time in 8 hours, we were all silent, staring out the window. What a treat!! I could get used to this. But all good things must come to an end and all good kids must hit the hay (as my dad would say), lights were soon out and we were all happily in bed.

Erin blog 3 Chi2The next day, we had breakfast in bed, went swimming in the rooftop pool and took the boys on the Navy Pier ferris wheel before packing back up. Next stop: Bloomington, IN. The home of Indiana University, my husband’s Alma Mater. He’s a third generation Hoosier and couldn’t be more proud. By the time we Erin blog 3 ferrisarrived on campus, he was already plotting out what fraternity our boys would pledge, where they will live on campus and how to get the best seats at Assembly Hall for a little IU Bball. (Side note: I really love his love of his school, but grooming our boys this early in life is just not fair to me and my hometown University of MN Golden Gopher pride. Not to mention, I’ll never stop crying if my boys move that far away from me. A counter plan to keep my boys in MN begins now . . . I’ll keep you posted on the progress.) We quickly jumped out of the car and did a walking tour Erin blog 3 IU familythrough campus. Even though IU is a rival Big Ten school to my U o MN, I have to admit, that campus is beautiful!!! After a dinner at one of his favorite restaurants, my husband took the boys to the book store to load up on all things Hoosier red and white. Outfits, posters, stuffed animals (are you kidding me?? This is too much), my boys emerged from the store looking like the newest freshman recruits. We checked IU off our road trip list and got to bed, the next day we were taking off for destination number three.

Lake Wawasee, in Syracuse, IN is where my husband spent every summer of his childhood. Leaving IU and driving north to Lake Wawasee, my boys were already in their swim trunks, sunscreen on, ready to dive into the Erin blog 3 slidewater as soon as we arrived. Pulling into the cottage my husband spent weeks at as a kid, we made this insanely long road trip, worth every minute. The lake is clear and clean, there are boats and jet skis and toys for everyone. And the cottage is a perfect setting to enjoy the final few days of summer.

My oldest, William, has a brand new Go Pro that he proudly wore as he jumped in the lake and sped around on the jet ski. James, our baby (fine. He’s almost 5, but will always be my baby) worked up the courage to make the giant lily pad his stomping grounds. We swam, boated, ate and repeated for 36 Erin blog 3 jetskihours! It was mostly marvelous, with just a few minor meltdowns. I mean no family of four can go 36 hours without a few meltdowns over whose turn it is anyway and who was really responsible for dropping the brand new Go Pro and letting it sink to the bottom of the lake . . . right? Right. Other than a few minor mishaps, we returned each night to the cottage a brand new shade of tan (even though we wear a lot of sunscreen) and a whole new level of exhausted.

It was bittersweet packing up for our final voyage, not only because I simply adore time with my three boys, but also because Syracuse, IN to Minneapolis, MN is no joke. About 10 hours, with stops and a nasty rain storm, to get back to home sweet home. But on our way home, there was definitely a sense of pride from all four of us. The kids were thrilled with the new adventures and are already plotting ways to permanently eat breakfast in bed. My husband was beaming with pride that his family had a blast in his favorite state. And I, to be real honest, am thrilled that I was able to keep this family unit in one piece, without massive meltdown for a total of 1000+ miles across the Midwest. Phew.

Skincare 101, or “I bought it, now how do I use it?!”

Hosting beauty shows each week is so much fun!  I get to work with fantastic guests, learn about the latest trends in skincare and, of course, sample EVERYTHING!  The one question I hear from you week after week is: ‘how do I use all of this stuff, and in what order do I use it?’ So, I thought a good, basic overview would be a fun blog post and I hope you find it helpful.  Keep in mind: this is a basic overview as we carry so many great brands. For brand specific questions, you can go to our website and find that most brands have super informative tutorial videos.  If you don’t find answers there, either leave a comment below with your question or visit my Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/HeatherHallEVINELive/, post your question and I’ll try to answer it for you.  Ready for Skincare 101??

Step 1: Cleansing

Heather blog 2 consultThis is critical to great skin.  Sleeping with our makeup on is one of the biggest mistakes we make, it REALLY ages us!  The skin rejuvenates while we sleep and, when its dirty and clogged, we slow or even stop this process.  I know we all get lazy at times but, as a general rule, we should all be going to bed with clean and hydrated skin.  Use a clean washcloth each time you cleanse and, if you own a cleansing brush, you get bonus points!  Alcohol-free cleansing wipes are okay every now and then, but shouldn’t be a substitute for thorough, old-fashioned cleansing.

Step 2: Exfoliating

Heather blog 2 Borghese

This is a done on an as needed basis, and everyone will be different.  I personally exfoliate three days a week, but you should test what works best for your skin. As we age, our cell turnover slows wayyyyy down (thanks, mother nature) and we need to start doing manually what our bodies once did naturally.  If you’re over 35, you should be exfoliating!  We offer tons of choices and I’m sure you can find one to work for you.

Step 3: Serums

Heather blog 2 immortalThis is usually the most concentrated and powerful anti-aging step we have!  If you’re looking for one area to splurge in, I’d say either serum or eye cream. Most brands we carry tell me their most advanced anti-aging ingredients are in the highest concentrations in the serums.  Some brands even offer eye serums!  As I layer skincare, I use the thinnest products first and then work my way up to my moisturizer. Serums go from the top of your forehead to the bottom of your neck. BONUS TIP – use leftovers on hands.

Step 4: Moisturizer

Heather blog 2 DimitriAlways apply your moisturizer with an upward sweeping motion. Gravity’s working hard enough to pull our skin down, so I’ll take any lift I can get!  Take time to massage your moisturizer in, and let serums absorb fully before taking this step. Massage is great for circulation and can make our daily skincare chore feel like a mini spa treatment.

Step 5: Eye Cream

Heather blog 2 all beauty 1If you can afford it, consider getting a cream specifically for the eye area. The skin around the eyes is more delicate, and requires more TLC, than the rest of our face. Apply eye cream in all areas of the eyes that your sunglasses would cover (I just learned this great tip recently from our of our fab guests!) This includes above the eyebrows, under eyes, along sides of eyes, and really work in the crows feet area. BONUS TIP: work extra product on forehead between brows to avoid the dreaded number 11s.

BONUS ROUND: Masks, peels, face oils, tools and supplements

Heather blog 2 SonyaThis is where you take your skin to the next level!  Invest in your five basics first and, when you can, splurge on something from this category. Or let your friends and family know that, when holidays and birthdays roll around, this is a GREAT gift idea for you. We offer too may to go through, but please read all the reviews at Evine.com and watch for our great Day of Beauty sales.

Here is to glowing skin!!

Hugs, Heather

Be yourself, everyone else is already taken!

Allison blog 1LBeing a host on television seems to be all glitz and glamour.  The truth is, I’m pretty simple behind the scenes.  One of my favorite passions is great skin care and make up.  Being simple and being passionate about good skin care and makeup don’t seem to go hand in hand, but they do!  I’m on a quest to find solutions to my aging skin and love to have fun with makeup – whether it’s a nude, no makeup look or all dolled up!

My friends ask me all the time – ‘Do you really use all those products?” The answer is yes, yes and yes! What is your issue?  That’s the amazing thing about great beauty – every item IS a solution for someone!  My bathroom counter is a bit crazy because some days I go crazy with a great mask or peel, and some days I just use a little coconut oil to bring moisture back to my skin!

Allison blog 2RI was diagnosed with Autoimmune Disease when I was little and battled my whole life with some type of stress to my skin.  When I was younger my mother would tell me just to love the skin I was in . . . and now I understand what she means.  Love what you have, really be happy in your own skin. In loving my skin, the entire world of skin care opened up to me.  So my suggestion is to simply have fun and try something new!                                                                                                                                                                                   No makeup at all…..yep, none.

There’s no wrong way to jazz up your routine and there might just be your next favorite eye cream around the corner.

So here goes my average day!

  • Always cleanse – Every day, morning, night, lunch time.  Seriously, whenever I need to add a little freshness to my day I cleanse my skin.  It might just be warm water all the way to a deep cleansing clean. My mom also told me to use good cotton washcloths, clean every time when washing to get a deep clean.
  • Hydrate – I use different creams for the different seasons and reasons.  If I’m going to bed, it might be something a bit heavier and, in the day, lighter.  But it really depends on my skin . . . if you need something specific, use it!
  • Eye Cream – Obsessed would put it mildly.  My eyes are showing their age and I love using different products . . . I’m on the quest to try them all!
  • Allison blog 3LMasks, Scrubs and Peels – Yes, Yes and Yes.  Have fun on a Friday, or after your boss yells at you, or when you just want to stay in and pamper yourself. Try new and fun ways to change things up and make yourself feel like a princess.

There are no rules for skincare, beauty or makeup. Love your skin, have fun with great products, try something new. Remember, your skin has been with you through it all and stuck with you!

Love, Joy and Peace!

p.s. Here’s one of my favorite, homemade Vanilla Lavender Sugar Scrubs – use on your feet, elbows and knees!

1 cup white sugar                                                                                            1/4 cup olive oil                                                                                                  1 teaspoon vanilla extract (pure)                                                                      5 drops of lavender oil

Mix it all together in a glass jar!

Who wants to come to work with me?

Heather blogSeeing as it’s now summer, lots of you are getting ready for your vacations and time away.  Maybe it’s packing up the car and going camping, to an amusement park, seeing family, or maybe something completely different!  For those of you who are staying around home but still need to ‘get away’ if even for just a moment, I’ve got a great idea: ever wondered what a day looks like as an Evine host? Let me take you to work with me for the day!

The first thing you need to know – the only thing that stays consistent is change! Our schedule is never the same day by day, week by week, and sometimes even hour by hour.

Today is a Friday and I wake up at 6 am to enjoy a much needed hot cup of coffee, then off to Pilates by 7am. After my workout I grab a quick shower and protein shake. There are a few glamorous errands that NEED to be done today such as buying cat food, cat litter, cat toys, cat nip…do you see a theme here?  I arrive at the Evine studio by 11 am and ready to start my shopping day with you, but guess what? I won’t see you on the air until 6:00pm for Before and After Beauty.

Heather cat photo

As I pass our security station, I notice we have a new guard. I spend the next 5 minutes explaining that I am, in fact, the woman whose face is on my badge. Funny how this never happens when I have makeup on!

As soon as I enter the building, I’m off to my first meeting of the day.   I swear I can hear the angels singing as I open the door to the meeting room… it’s a shopping free-for-all with the jewelry buyers! Tray after tray of beautiful jewelry are spread across the table. Together we try one and drool over the merchandise, wishing we could take it all home with us. Once we’ve had our fun, we get down to business by reviewing customer reviews and feedback to identify what you (our viewers) want to see. I tell them what questions you call in with while I’m on the air and also keep a list of your personal requests for our talented designers. Michael Valitutti’s team shares some exciting new items in the world of cameos; Chuck Clemency’s team has a hot new design in morganite; and Dallas Prince’s team…well I have been sworn to secrecy, but you just wait! Overall, a very productive meeting.

Heather cameo blog

Now it’s down to the beauty offices. This place feels like home to me. It’s a paradise of plush couches, elegant light fixtures, and more beauty products than a girl could ever dream of. Here I get to slather on new creams, and check out the hot summer lipstick colors. The biggest question I hear from all of you is, “Heather do you REALLY use that?” My answer is always “Yes!” I sample every last item in each collection I present to you. Obviously, I cannot use them all everyday or I would never leave my vanity!!

Next, it’s back to the host room. I have my cue cards and show plans strewn about. I scribble all of my notes on each card so I don’t forget to ask the questions I know you want answered. My research takes at least 2 hours for show. After visiting with each of my 4 guests for 15 minutes each, I feel prepared to take you shopping.

What I do next is one of my favorite parts of the day. It’s a trip to the pink room! This where our amazing stylist Annabelle does her magic. She transforms my messy pilates pony tail to a long silky blowout that finally has me looking like my Evine badge. It’s now 1 hour to showtime and I sit with our whole team (producer, director, visual stylist and sales manager) discussing the flow of the show… or at least how we THINK the show will go. Then we get a good laugh as we realize live TV never goes as planned.  In the few short minutes before the cameras roll, I put in my earpiece and position my microphone, the lights dim and studio goes quiet. I sit down at the vanity in studio E and get ready to say “Good Friday evening everyone and welcome into Before and After Beauty”. You all know how the rest of my night goes as you and I go shopping together through your television.

I am back home and in my PJ’s by 10pm, already excited for my 6 am wake up call to do it all again. I love my job!

Summer vacation!

Summertime for me is going on a really cool vacation!  I start planning our vacations months in advance.  I find so much joy in researching the destination that we plan on visiting. I will go online to read reviews of hotels, restaurants and museums. I even ask my friends and family their advice on what they recommend if they have been to that destination before.

For me, it is like being a child again anticipating Christmas gearing up for the trip.  I’m very lucky that my husband and I both enjoy the same things and we both have a passion for travel and experiencing new places every year.

Mel Venice blog

This year we planned our first trip to Italy to celebrate my 50th birthday.  It was a trip of a lifetime and a dream come true for me.  We landed in Venice on my 50th birthday and then traveled to the Tuscany region and toured some great wineries and had dinner with Stefano and his lovely Mel Stefanowife!  He is one of our best gold vendors and has been going on-air at EVINE for almost 20 years!

Mel Manuela

I also had dinner with my friend Manuela Biancospino in Rome. She is another fabulous guest and represents the Toscana Jewelry line.

MEl UffiziWe enjoyed going to the Uffizi museum and the Accademia Gallery to see David – just incredible.  From there we left Florence for Positano and Capri, and enjoyed the Mediterranean for a week before finishing our trip in Rome!  We had great walking tours and also were lucky enough to see Pope Francis give his blessing in St. Peter’s Square on Father’s Day.

What about you? Where would you like to go on a trip?  A vacation doesn’t need to be anywhere far off or exotic to be a dream come true, it can be down the block or around the corner!  I’d love to hear from you.
