Tucson Gem and Mineral Show

The Tucson Gem and Mineral Society started the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show in the parking lot of an elementary school in 1955.  Today, over 55,000 gem enthusiasts arrive over the course of 2 weeks in January/February to attend over 40 shows taking place all over Tucson.

Evine’s hosts, buyers, and designers have attended the Tucson Gem fair for over 20 years.  Chuck Clemency was the first vendor that joined us in Tucson.  He introduced us to Prickly Pear Margaritas, Cactus Body Slamming, Cheese Troughs, and more colors of Topaz than anyone else in the business.

Years later, Paul Deasy and Michael Valitutti joined the Evine family, and the Three Amigos were born!  Today, many of our best designers attend the Tucson Gem Show in order to find the most magnificent gems in the world.

We just returned from Tucson after broadcasting live from the event with many of our customers’ favorite collections: Gems en Vogue, Gem Treasures, Gem Insider, Dallas Prince, JOYA and Sunwest.  I spent a few days walking the shows with our buyers and designers and am looking forward to sharing with our customers what we are bringing “Back from Tucson” this week during our shows Thursday through Saturday!

Style Forecast!

I am so excited that Evine has asked me to host their new fashion show called Style Forecast!  It’s destination programming that will happen every Monday night at 7:00 pm ET starting October 10th.  The team has been busy working on the concept and show planning since early this Summer. There have been loads of fun meetings to discuss this exciting show as well as our set design!  It has just been so much fun being involved at every level.mm-blog-4-production-meeting-1

I’ll help you figure out what you’re comfortable in, what you like best on yourself, and how to style your clothes in a unique way.  Monday nights are for you!  A girlfriend’s celebration to talk style!  Solve your daily wardrobe dilemma (What should I wear?) with smart fashion tips and clothing advice from your trusted fashion guests like one of my favorites . . . Sam Saboura from One World Fashions!  You know I love what this brand does for my curvy shape and I know you will love it too!

mm-blog-4-melissa-sam-4mm-blog-4-one-world-5Paula’s Closet by Paula Deen is one of my new favorite fashion brands on Evine, and our customers love it too!  You’ll appreciate her great sense of style and humor while she presents her beautiful clothing line.  Oh, and if you have been watching me on Evine . . . you know I have a weakness for a great handbag!  Madi Claire, Anushka, and Pietro will be just a few of the stylish brands that I’ll have the opportunity to present to you.

It may sound silly . . . but I have a passion for fashion! As a teenager,  I would beg my mom to take me to the mall to shop for clothes.  And, of course, I would try on everything.  I’ve always loved fashion but it really clicked for me in high school when I started to realize that a really cute outfit made me feel good and boosted my confidence.  To this day, shopping for a great wardrobe is still fun for me . . . textured fabrics, patent leather, ribbed knits and more!

mm-blog-4-melissa-paula-6mm-blog-4-handbags-7Are you ready for a new you?  It’s a new season, new trends, new must haves, new ideas, and new ways to WOW you!

Behind the Scenes in NYC

Behind the Scenes with our fashion designers in NYC:  As a former NYC native, I was excited to do some family sightseeing at the Statue of Liberty, visit Ground Zero where two waterfall monuments have been built, naming all of those who passed during 9/11, eat fabulous food and of course,  SHOP!

wr-blog-3-chloeThe shopping in NYC can have your head spin with high end fashions and large chain stores that have cute fashion, but EXPENSIVE –  I was so excited to visit some of our biggest names in fashion to see what they had coming down the pike for fall- Marc Bouwer, WDNY, Indigo Thread Co. and the manufacturer who creates V by Vanessa Williams for Evine.

wr-blog-3-marcFirst stop – the meat packing district – a hot fashion mecca downtown just steps away from Ground Zero and Marc Bouwer Unlimited Headquarters.  Marc was the picture of a working designer in jeans and a t-shirt, working on a stunning gown for some of his big name celebrity clientele’s red carpet moment.  I saw racks and racks of fully beaded gowns, shirts, jersey gowns that he was adding crystals to and day dresses for spring!  He had bins and bins of jewels, trim, lace, Swarovski crystals and all color coded – an artist’s dream!  He began showing me the gowns wr-blgo-3-sequinsworn by celebrities, telling me who wore what and to which major event, and then showed me works in progress for us at Evine – let’s just say sleeves are BIG: bell sleeves, details on the sleeves, and faux suede.  I have his faux suede pants and LOVE them!  What would his fall collection be without a moto jacket in faux leather? Of course those are coming!  While I was there he had me try on some of his samples and I loved them!  They fit so well and his print is fun and inventive!  Marc is a genius with fashion and can make any body look their best – that is the ‘mark’ of a true designer.

wr-blgo-3-marc-and-wendi

wr-blog-3-yellowNext was a visit to Warren Donner, fashion designer for WDNY.  Warren has been in the fashion business for 35 years and has impeccable taste for trends!  When I saw his studio it was well-organized by color story and I saw so many beautiful pale pink romantic blouses, full bell sleeves with chiffon, sequins galore for the holidays, faux fur chubbies in black and white, and one I wanted to take home featuring chocolate/pale pink and ivory.  He is a master at bringing us affordable trends that make bold and fun statements.  You’ll LOVE what is coming up!  Warren himself has a penchant for ‘Veuve’ and apparently a day doesn’t go by without a glass of his favorite champagne –  you won’t hear me complaining!

wr-blog-3-wdYellow is his color and his yellow Corvette makes a statement everywhere he goes – he drove me to his favorite restaurant, Mr. Chows downtown where everyone knows his name.

wr-blog-3-wd-vetteMy daughter, a budding fashion designer, experienced duck for the first time. Great ready for a fabulous fall line up from Warren!

wr-blog-3-wd-dinnerThe manufacturer who works with some of our most popular brands like Indigo Thread and V by Vanessa Williams is located in NYC, and Susan Gainsborg is instrumental in working with our celebrity lines and helping them to bring their ideas to life!  Vanessa is bringing us jeans in the fall, along with more accents of color that flatter all body types.  There are a few pieces from Indigo, as well – of course I loved the sleeve on this top!  wr-blog-3-white-bellIndigo is bringing you more of what you love in faux suede, tie dyes, tunics, dramatic sleeves, lace and earthy tones that are denim friendly!  we’ve got a lot of Fashion coming up on the calendar, with a big Fall Fashion Day on the list.  See you there!

Why Do Collectors Collect?

Kendy blog 2 2LThroughout my 30 years in the Home Shopping Industry, I’ve discovered that our customers love to collect. In the 1980’s, die cast cars, dolls, and capitamonte were the hottest collectibles.

Kendy blog 2 1LOnce the 90’s rolled around, sports collectibles, coins, and beanie babies were on the must buy lists of home shopping customers.

Today, watches, Tiffany style lighting, and Waterford Crystal are the collectibles of choice.

Kendy blog 2 1RI think collecting is an essential childhood hobby. It creates opportunities for curiosity and learning. It teaches kids how to take care of objects, spend money wisely, and cooperate when negotiating and trading. As kids, most of us collected marbles, trading cards, stamps, coins, etc. Kendy blog 2 2MMy children collected rocks and gems as they were curious about all of the gems I sold. Did you collect anything when you were a child? What was your favorite thing to collect and your prized possession? I wonder if kids collect as much as we used to Kendy blog 2 2Rback in the day . . .

I, personally, am not a collector of things at all. So, it’s curious to me why people become collectors. Really no one in my family collected anything, except my grandmother who had a plate collection on her wall. It makes me think that collecting begins as Kendy blog 2 3Ra family tradition . . . my parents really only collected family memorabilia, so I do the same in order to preserve the past. We preserve the kids’ photos, artwork, ribbons, letters of accomplishment, etc.

So, I’m curious . . .Kendy blog 2 3L

What do you collect?

Why do you collect?

How did you get started?

Is it a family tradition, passion, obsession, habit?

Do you collect for investment purposes, perceiving the items will increase in value over the years?

Kendy blog 2 3RDo you collect for status?

Has your collecting turned into hoarding?

What do you wish you had never collected?

What do you collect that Evine Kendy blog 2 1Mdoesn’t sell that you’d like to see us offer?

If you do collect things we offer, what are you missing in your collection that you’d like to see?

Please let me know, I’d love to hear about it!

Treasures from my Desk

I love my office at home!  While sitting at my desk, there are three different views. To the front, I have a view of a quiet, small, beautiful lake, large trees and my gardens. In the early morning hours there are ducks and geese relaxing on the water, giving me a very serene and peaceful view to start my day.  At dusk, the western facing sunsets are simply magnificent.

To the back of my desk is of a wonderful credenza filled with framed photos of my mom and dad, my nanas and papas, my honey, children and our pets. Then there are the hundreds of books, some enjoyed and some that have been on my ‘to read list’ for years.

The third view, the worst view of my office – is when I open the many drawers below the desk that are full of files, documents and clutter, accumulated for almost 20 years.

I recently decided to go through my files and do some purging and organizing.  I discovered many long-lost love notes from my sweetie, notes that were tucked into the lunchboxes of my children, outdated insurance info, garden blueprints, important company e-mails (why was I saving these?), my first professional reel, and my first contract with Evine 18 years ago. But then I hit the jackpot . . . photos, taken over the past 15 years, of promo and marketing pieces that my network has done. I knew many of you would recognize some of my friends and colleagues and enjoy them just as much as I did when I first pulled them out of my messy files!

Lynne blog 2 Tuscon remoteMy first Tucson remote 12 years ago! I was so nervous to be traveling with such industry professionals as Kendy Kloepfer, Karen Connelly and of course, Chuck Clemency. What if I goofed it all up? Chuck would never, ever let me live it down!

Shooting the annual holiday greeting card was always such a hoot!   We would sometimes have to shoot for hours because we had such hard time being serious when we all got together!

Lynne blog 2 eyal

This promotional piece was for one of the first shows I ever did with the CEO of Invicta, Eyal Lalo. There was so much anticipation because this was the first big diamond piece we had ever done on the network. Every executive of the company was in the audience watching and I remember it sold out in minutes.

Lynne blog host pick 1RThe beginning of ‘Host Pick’ at the network . . . and still one of my favorites to this day. It was so much fun to enjoy such elaborate hair, make-up and wardrobe (and of course, Photoshop!) on some fabulous off-site location. I must admit . . . I felt a little like a movie star . . . if just for a day.

Now that my drawers are cleaned out and organized, and I’ve found my little ‘treasures from my desk’, I don’t think I’m going to put them back into the same cramped files. I’m not quite sure what I’ll do with them yet . . .  I think I’ll just let them sit on the top of my desk for a while as I decide.

Who wants to come to work with me?

Heather blogSeeing as it’s now summer, lots of you are getting ready for your vacations and time away.  Maybe it’s packing up the car and going camping, to an amusement park, seeing family, or maybe something completely different!  For those of you who are staying around home but still need to ‘get away’ if even for just a moment, I’ve got a great idea: ever wondered what a day looks like as an Evine host? Let me take you to work with me for the day!

The first thing you need to know – the only thing that stays consistent is change! Our schedule is never the same day by day, week by week, and sometimes even hour by hour.

Today is a Friday and I wake up at 6 am to enjoy a much needed hot cup of coffee, then off to Pilates by 7am. After my workout I grab a quick shower and protein shake. There are a few glamorous errands that NEED to be done today such as buying cat food, cat litter, cat toys, cat nip…do you see a theme here?  I arrive at the Evine studio by 11 am and ready to start my shopping day with you, but guess what? I won’t see you on the air until 6:00pm for Before and After Beauty.

Heather cat photo

As I pass our security station, I notice we have a new guard. I spend the next 5 minutes explaining that I am, in fact, the woman whose face is on my badge. Funny how this never happens when I have makeup on!

As soon as I enter the building, I’m off to my first meeting of the day.   I swear I can hear the angels singing as I open the door to the meeting room… it’s a shopping free-for-all with the jewelry buyers! Tray after tray of beautiful jewelry are spread across the table. Together we try one and drool over the merchandise, wishing we could take it all home with us. Once we’ve had our fun, we get down to business by reviewing customer reviews and feedback to identify what you (our viewers) want to see. I tell them what questions you call in with while I’m on the air and also keep a list of your personal requests for our talented designers. Michael Valitutti’s team shares some exciting new items in the world of cameos; Chuck Clemency’s team has a hot new design in morganite; and Dallas Prince’s team…well I have been sworn to secrecy, but you just wait! Overall, a very productive meeting.

Heather cameo blog

Now it’s down to the beauty offices. This place feels like home to me. It’s a paradise of plush couches, elegant light fixtures, and more beauty products than a girl could ever dream of. Here I get to slather on new creams, and check out the hot summer lipstick colors. The biggest question I hear from all of you is, “Heather do you REALLY use that?” My answer is always “Yes!” I sample every last item in each collection I present to you. Obviously, I cannot use them all everyday or I would never leave my vanity!!

Next, it’s back to the host room. I have my cue cards and show plans strewn about. I scribble all of my notes on each card so I don’t forget to ask the questions I know you want answered. My research takes at least 2 hours for show. After visiting with each of my 4 guests for 15 minutes each, I feel prepared to take you shopping.

What I do next is one of my favorite parts of the day. It’s a trip to the pink room! This where our amazing stylist Annabelle does her magic. She transforms my messy pilates pony tail to a long silky blowout that finally has me looking like my Evine badge. It’s now 1 hour to showtime and I sit with our whole team (producer, director, visual stylist and sales manager) discussing the flow of the show… or at least how we THINK the show will go. Then we get a good laugh as we realize live TV never goes as planned.  In the few short minutes before the cameras roll, I put in my earpiece and position my microphone, the lights dim and studio goes quiet. I sit down at the vanity in studio E and get ready to say “Good Friday evening everyone and welcome into Before and After Beauty”. You all know how the rest of my night goes as you and I go shopping together through your television.

I am back home and in my PJ’s by 10pm, already excited for my 6 am wake up call to do it all again. I love my job!

Summer vacation!

Summertime for me is going on a really cool vacation!  I start planning our vacations months in advance.  I find so much joy in researching the destination that we plan on visiting. I will go online to read reviews of hotels, restaurants and museums. I even ask my friends and family their advice on what they recommend if they have been to that destination before.

For me, it is like being a child again anticipating Christmas gearing up for the trip.  I’m very lucky that my husband and I both enjoy the same things and we both have a passion for travel and experiencing new places every year.

Mel Venice blog

This year we planned our first trip to Italy to celebrate my 50th birthday.  It was a trip of a lifetime and a dream come true for me.  We landed in Venice on my 50th birthday and then traveled to the Tuscany region and toured some great wineries and had dinner with Stefano and his lovely Mel Stefanowife!  He is one of our best gold vendors and has been going on-air at EVINE for almost 20 years!

Mel Manuela

I also had dinner with my friend Manuela Biancospino in Rome. She is another fabulous guest and represents the Toscana Jewelry line.

MEl UffiziWe enjoyed going to the Uffizi museum and the Accademia Gallery to see David – just incredible.  From there we left Florence for Positano and Capri, and enjoyed the Mediterranean for a week before finishing our trip in Rome!  We had great walking tours and also were lucky enough to see Pope Francis give his blessing in St. Peter’s Square on Father’s Day.

What about you? Where would you like to go on a trip?  A vacation doesn’t need to be anywhere far off or exotic to be a dream come true, it can be down the block or around the corner!  I’d love to hear from you.
